LiPo Battery Care & Storage Guide

LiPo batteries power almost every modern RC car but are the most misunderstood—and dangerous if mishandled—part in the hobby. Get the basics right.

LiPo (Lithium Polymer) batteries power almost every modern RC car, but they're also the single most misunderstood — and most dangerous if mishandled — part in the hobby. Get the basics right and a good pack will last hundreds of cycles. Get them wrong and you risk a puffed pack, a dead battery, or worse, a fire.

Charging Rules

  • Always charge on a LiPo-safe charger, set to the correct cell count (2S, 3S, 4S, etc.) and never leave a charging pack unattended.
  • Charge at 1C unless the pack is rated higher. A 5000mAh pack at 1C charges at 5 amps. Faster isn't free — it adds heat and wear.
  • Never charge a swollen, punctured, or damaged pack. Retire it safely instead (many hobby shops take damaged LiPos for proper disposal).
  • Charge in a fireproof LiPo bag or ammo can, away from anything flammable, especially unattended overnight charges.

Storage Voltage Matters

LiPos should never be stored at full charge for long periods — it stresses the cells and shortens lifespan. Most chargers have a "storage" mode that brings each cell to roughly 3.8V, the ideal resting voltage for a pack that won't be used for a week or more.

  • Running the pack soon (within a day or two)? Fine to leave at full charge.
  • Storing for a week+? Always store-charge it first.
  • Never store a pack fully discharged — deep discharge damages cells permanently.

Temperature & Handling

  • Store packs at room temperature, ideally 40–80°F. Never leave LiPos in a hot car — heat is the fastest way to degrade or damage a cell.
  • Avoid physical impacts, punctures, or crushing. A dented or bloated pack has internal damage even if it still reads a normal voltage.
  • Let a pack cool to room temperature after a hard run before charging.

Signs It's Time to Retire a Pack

  • Visible puffing or swelling
  • Voltage sag that's gotten noticeably worse run-to-run
  • Individual cell voltages that drift far apart during balance charging
  • Any punctures, tears in the shrink wrap, or exposed foil

Disposal

Never throw a LiPo in household trash. Fully discharge it (many hobby shops offer a saltwater discharge method or drop-off recycling) before disposal.

Treat your batteries well and they'll treat your run time well — a properly cared-for LiPo can deliver 300–500 cycles before you notice real capacity loss.
