How to Waterproof Your RC Car Electronics

Running through puddles, mud, or wet grass is half the fun of bashing — but stock electronics on many entry-level RC cars aren't sealed for it. Here's how to protect your investment.
Know What You're Working With
Check your ESC, receiver, and servo specs first — many modern RC electronics are already sold as "waterproof" or "water-resistant," which means a splash or light rain is fine but full submersion isn't. Confirm before you assume.
Receiver Box
Most RC chassis include a sealed receiver box. Make sure:
- The lid gasket/seal is intact and seated properly — a cracked or missing seal is the most common failure point.
- Antenna wire exits through a sealed grommet, not a bare hole.
- No wires are pinched, preventing the lid from sealing flush.
Electronics Not Natively Waterproof
If your ESC or receiver isn't waterproof-rated, a few practical options:
- Conformal coating — a thin, sprayable or brush-on coating that protects circuit boards from moisture without affecting function. Apply to the ESC board (not the connectors) and let it fully cure before use.
- Dielectric grease on connectors and plugs helps prevent corrosion from moisture intrusion.
- Heat-shrink and silicone sealant around wire entry points on housings.
Servo Waterproofing
- Confirm your servo is rated waterproof — many budget servos aren't.
- If not, a servo saver boot or aftermarket waterproof servo is a worthwhile upgrade before regular wet-weather use.
Motor Considerations
- Sealed/waterproof brushless motors exist and are worth the upgrade if you run in wet or muddy conditions regularly.
- Non-sealed motors can usually survive light splashes but should be dried and inspected after any heavy exposure — corrosion on the windings or bearings is the main risk.
After Every Wet Run
- Remove the battery and open the receiver box to check for any moisture intrusion.
- Dry the chassis, especially around bearings, diffs, and the motor — trapped moisture causes long-term corrosion even if nothing failed immediately.
- Re-grease bearings and diff more frequently if you run wet conditions often, since water displaces lubrication.
Bottom Line
Waterproofing is a spectrum — sealing gaskets and connectors prevents most casual issues, conformal coating adds real protection for non-rated electronics, and drying/inspecting after every wet run is the cheapest insurance of all.
