How to Upgrade Your RC Car's Drivetrain

Why Drivetrain Upgrades Matter

Stock plastic gears, axles, and drive shafts are typically designed for the power level of the stock motor. Upgrading to a more powerful brushless motor without addressing the drivetrain often leads to stripped gears, snapped axles, or a destroyed differential — usually at the worst possible moment.

Start With the Differentials

Diffs are one of the most common failure points under increased torque.

  • Stock plastic diff gears are the usual first upgrade — metal diff gears handle significantly more torque without stripping.
  • Consider diff type — gear diffs are common stock, but some setups benefit from upgrading to a ball diff (more tunable but higher maintenance) depending on your use case (racing vs. bashing).

Drive Shafts & CVDs

Stock drive shafts (often CVD-style — constant velocity drive) can snap under hard acceleration or impacts with a more powerful motor. Upgraded steel or hardened drive shafts are a common and relatively affordable reinforcement.

Gears (Spur & Pinion)

Metal pinion and spur gears resist stripping far better than stock plastic under increased torque — this is often one of the cheapest, highest-value drivetrain upgrades available.

Bearings

More power means more heat and stress on bearings. Upgrading to higher-quality sealed bearings (especially if you run wet or dusty conditions) reduces drag and wear, keeping the rest of the drivetrain running smoother and cooler.

Axles & Hubs

For heavier bashing or higher-torque builds, upgraded steel axles and hubs resist bending or snapping under hard impacts or high torque far better than stock components.

A Sensible Upgrade Order

  1. Metal spur and pinion gears — cheap, high-impact, addresses the most common failure point.
  2. Metal diff gears / upgraded diff — protects against the next most common failure.
  3. Upgraded drive shafts/CVDs — especially important if you're adding significant torque.
  4. Bearings — improves efficiency and reduces wear across the whole drivetrain.
  5. Axles/hubs — worth it for heavy bashing or high-impact use, less critical for smoother racing surfaces.

A Word of Caution

Upgrade incrementally and test between changes rather than replacing everything at once — this makes it much easier to identify which part actually needed reinforcement versus which upgrades weren't necessary for your specific driving style.

Bottom Line

If you're upgrading to a more powerful motor, budget for drivetrain reinforcement at the same time — a stronger motor exposes every weak link in the chain, and the drivetrain is almost always where that weak link lives on a stock car.
