How to Choose the Right ESC for Your RC Car

The ESC (Electronic Speed Control) is the traffic cop between your battery and your motor. Picking the wrong one is one of the most common — and most expensive — mistakes in the hobby, since an underpowered ESC can burn out under load.
Match It to Your Motor First
Every ESC has an amperage rating (continuous and burst). As a rule of thumb, your ESC's continuous rating should comfortably exceed what your motor draws under hard load, not just at idle.
- Small brushed motors (bashing): 25–60A ESCs are typically plenty.
- Mid-size brushless (short course, 1/10 buggy): 80–120A is a common sweet spot.
- High-power brushless / large scale (1/8 buggy, monster truck): 150A+ ESCs, often with a fan and heatsink.
Running an ESC near its absolute max continuously will shorten its life and risk thermal shutdown mid-run.
Brushed vs Brushless ESCs Are Not Interchangeable
Brushed ESCs and brushless ESCs use completely different control systems — a brushless motor requires a brushless ESC (it needs to sense motor timing via sensored or sensorless feedback). Always buy them as a matched pair unless you know exactly what you're doing.
Sensored vs Sensorless
- Sensored: Smoother low-speed control, better for crawling and technical driving, slightly more wiring.
- Sensorless: Simpler wiring, very common for bashing and racing, slightly less precise at very low throttle.
Voltage & Cell Count
Check the ESC's supported cell count (2S, 3S, 4S, 6S, etc.) before buying a bigger battery — running a pack above an ESC's rated voltage is a fast way to destroy it.
Programmability
Better ESCs let you adjust drag brake, punch/acceleration curve, low-voltage cutoff, and timing. If you're tuning for racing or crawling, look for an ESC with a programming card or app support — these settings can transform how a car feels without touching the hardware.
Cooling
Any ESC running near its rated amperage will get hot. A heatsink and, on higher-power builds, an active cooling fan meaningfully extend ESC life — cheap insurance against a $60–150 part failing mid-season.
Quick Checklist Before You Buy
- Confirm brushed or brushless match with your motor
- Confirm cell count support matches your battery plans
- Choose amperage with headroom, not exactly at your expected draw
- Check for programmability if you plan to tune
- Budget for a heatsink/fan on higher-power setups
